When to Hold a Story
David Martin, CBS news correspondent, was on last week's On the Media, which I listen to via the podcast from WNYC. In the following clip, lifted from the show, David Martin talks about a story he held, and also about one he did not hold, and the consequences of that mistake. "Once burned, twice shy" indeed. Listen to Brooke Gladstone probe for his reasons. He stands his ground, which I find admirable.Play clip.
Proud Idiots of the World Unite! You Have Nothing To Lose But Your Dignity!
Antonin Scalia has very strong opinions about judges using foreign court decisions to interpret U.S law. He's against it. He gave a speech at the American Enterprise Institute on this topic on 2/25. I'm going to play a clip from the speech, and some short clips from the end when, as blogger Penraker notes, some Proud Idiots got up to prove their idiocy to all the world. One Aaron Yule makes a point of trying to attend speeches of others in order to ask ridiculous questions of intelligent people. He's a member of the LaRouche Youth Movement, and a quick google search finds him disrupting Nader and Kerry speeches as well. He's clearly an equal opportunity idiot. First we have Scalia discussing why it is important to use American law and doctrine to interpret American cases, and why it is not appropriate to take the opinions of a foreign court when deciding domestic cases. Thanks to C-SPAN for the audio.Play clip.
Now come the questions. The first is from a legal scholar from the U.C. Hastings School of Law with an intelligent question, and a great answer. Then come the first of the Proud Idiots.

Mr. Yule continued his disruptive behavior until he was escorted out of the meeting. The AP covered the speech as if Mr. Yule was someone speaking "truth to power", when as you can hear, he was speaking idiocy to the intelligent. Throw the bum out, I say. Point of Law said this about the coverage of the speech:
Naturally, the only AP coverage of the speech focused on the LaRouche heckler, and (without mentioning his affiliation) made him out to be a censored hero rather than a cult member who's pulled similar stunts at Kerry and Nader events. This is sure to make the Supreme Court all the more welcoming of tv cameras.
Bolton's Sabre Rattling
The U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., John Bolton, gave a speech this week to the American Israel Public Affairs Council, or AIPAC. C-SPAN covered it. Powerline Blog pointed me to it. He minced no words about the Iranian nuclear weapon and terrorism sponsorship activities. Here's a clip from mid-way through his speech.

Three Minutes Hate
Little Green Footballs today pointed to a post by The Indepundit, also known as Citizen Smash, who attended an event at my Alma Mater, the University of California, San Diego. Described as follows:IN GEORGE ORWELL'S classic novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, the author describes a daily ritual called the "Two Minutes Hate," wherein citizens of the totalitarian state of Oceania practice unleashing their wrath on enemies of the state. On Friday, at an event hosted by the UC San Diego College Democrats, I got an idea of what such a ritual might look like -- in reverse -- in the real world. The actual meeting ran for about two hours, but I've captured the essence of the event in an audio montage that runs just under three minutes. In a nod to Orwell, I'm calling it the "Three Minutes Hate."
Give it a listen, and see if you can figure out what this group's particular agenda might be.
Here is Citizen's Smash's Three Minute Excerpt. Great theater.
